1968年10月20日，Fosbury在八萬名觀眾前以自創的背向式，身子反弓成一道優美的弧線，一躍而過七英尺又四點二五英寸，贏得墨西哥奧運的跳高冠軍。他石破天驚的創舉不但讓現場的觀眾歡聲雷動，同時也讓一輩子鑽研剪式和俯臥式的所有參賽選手目瞪口呆。
